*If there is no undergrad present at 9 p.m. the monitor may close the lab for the day.
** TA can leave at 4 p.m. on Friday if no undergrad present. TA can close the lab during ChE seminar between 4:10 to 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. During regular hours, if the door is closed, an undergraduate student may ask a graduate student in a nearby room to open the door.

If you need to use the lab at a time not listed above, please contact a faculty member to schedule it.  The TA is responsible for enforcing the rules in the PC lab.

This lab has two live video cameras in use.

All of our PC's are protected by a sophisticated security software program. Users can launch a program only by clicking an icon on the screen. Users can save files only in the c:\temp directory. Users can put only non-program files (such as document files) on the hard disk. Explorer (file manager), My Computer, Network Neighborhood, Start Button and Recycle Bin are all disabled. You cannot get to the DOS prompt. You can format a disk only by using the Notepad to open drive A: at which time Notepad will ask you whether you want to format your disk or not. To see the file names, delete a file, copy a file or rename a file, you can use the Notepad's Open menu and click the right-hand-side mouse button on a file name to get a menu for Delete, Rename, Send To (Floppy A or c:\temp) options. The Send To menu can be used to copy a file to Floppy A or c:\temp. Remember, Notepad is now like your File Manager in Windows 3.11. You may also use WS-FTP without connecting to a remote host. You can delete files in the c:\temp more efficiently using WS-FTP than using Notepad.

In Matlab, you can run an m-file or load a workspace file (.mat file) straight from your disk by typing the command: cd a: first.

Use the Notepad's Open menu. Highlight a file name and hit the delete key. You can also use WS_FTP.

Hit print-screen key. Press Ctrl and Esc keys at the same time to shrink CHENCO. Open the Paint program in the Accessories folder. Click Paste in the Edit menu. After 10 seconds, you will see the screen shot. Click Invert Colors in the Images menu. You can now print the screen shot.
Note: When you hit the print-screen key, the PC puts the screen shot to its clipboard. You can go to Paint or Word, etc. to paste the image. Paint program is able to invert the colors, so you will have black words on white sheet. If you want a screen shot for a Window, not the whole screen, you can hit Alt and print-screen keys at the same time instead of hitting only the print-screen key.

If your PC cannot print, restart the PC. If it still does not work, use another PC. Report the problem. When the printer is in normal standby state, it displays "READY" message. Only the Ready light should be on.

Reboot the PC. Never complain about anything before you have done this. If reboot does not solve the problem, Report the problem.

That happens from time to time, especially in Netscape due to the security software protection. Click cancel to remove that warning message. Do not report this as a problem.

If your diskette is write protected, it cannot be infected. Avoid rebooting the PC. Never leave a diskette in the floppy drive unintentionally during rebooting.

The easiest way is to (1) Open Netscape (2) In the Options menu, click Mail and News Preferences. Click the Identity tab. Enter your e-mail address. You are now able to send e-mail. To send an e-mail to any ChE professor, simply go to his/her home page and click on the e-mail address. A mail screen pops up. You can attach any file on your PC in your mail. You can also click Netscape Mail in the menu item called Window in Netscape to start the mail program.
